The GBP/USD showed moderate volatility in the range of 40 on Wednesday, after the Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged and suggested that two rate cuts are still expected this year. At the time of writing, the pair traded around 1.3450, recording a moderate 0.20% increase, with traders awaiting a press conference by Fed Chairman Powell.

As expected, the Fed maintains the target range of the federal funds rate at 4.25%-4.50%, reiterating that the U.S. economy continues to expand at a steady pace and the labor market is in a strong state. The June economic forecast summary (SEP) shows that the outlook for GDP growth in 2025 is slightly lowered, from 1.7% in March to 1.4%. The forecast for unemployment was revised to 4.5% from 4.4%, while the core PCE inflation forecast rose to 3.1% from 2.8%.
The median federal funds rate forecast for 2025 remains at 3.9%, suggesting that Fed officials still expect two 25 basis points cuts this year.
GBP/USD Reaction
At the time of writing, GBP/USD is currently trading in the range of 1.3450–1.3500, with the key resistance at 1.3535 at the top of the 20-day Simple Moving Average (SMA). If Powell is dovish, it is expectedIt will rise further, with 1.3600 going to be the next target, followed by a test of the annual high of 1.3631. Conversely, if Powell leans toward hawkish, the chances of falling below 1.3400 will increase, paving the way for testing 1.3376 of the 50-day SMA, followed by 1.3350.
