USD/JPY fell as Fed dovish expectations pressure yields, market focus turned to Powell

After the Fed's policy decision, the yen (JPY) upwards against the US dollar (USD) further expanded, and traders turned their attention to the speech of Fed Chairman Jerome Powell.

The US dollar/JPY fell sharply after the announcement and is currently trading around 144.50, down 0.45% intraday as bond yields declined and interest rate cut expectations strengthened.

As expected, the Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged at 4.25%-4.50%, and the decision was consistent across the board. Policymakers mentioned the ongoing uncertainty of fiscal policy, tariffs and tax measures, making it difficult to provide clear forward guidance.

The market interprets this update as dovish. Treasury yields fell, with the 2-year Treasury yield falling by nearly 5 basis points to 3.9%. The updated dot map now hints that interest rate cuts will be two times by the end of 2025, while the forecast for March is once. Seven FOMC members are expected to cut interest rates twice, while four are expected to cut interest rates only once.

Some analysts question whether the data supports this shift. However, the market responded positively to the looser tone in the forecast.

The Fed deleted the wording that had previously warned of rising inflation and unemployment risks. Although uncertainty remains, the labor market is now described as “stable” with unemployment expected to rise to 4.5% by the end of the year.

Core PCE inflation is now expected to be 3.1%, up from 2.8% in March, while overall inflation is expected to reach 3.0%. Economic growth is expected to slow to 1.4%, down from 1.7% previously forecast.

Now all eyes are turned to Fed Chairman BaoWill's press conference to get clear guidance on policy prospects. His tone and guidance will be the key to determining whether the market will maintain its expectations of a near-term interest rate cut or adjust its direction.
