WTI and Brent crude oil futures gained support in early Thursday after five consecutive trading days of decline. A key factor in recent price pressure is that US President Donald Trump said the negotiations with Russia have made "significant progress", triggering speculation that the United States may relax sanctions on Russia.
The Kremlin news confirmed that Trump and Russian President Putin will meet in the next few days. This has sparked uncertainty about the timing and severity of the market's implementation of potential secondary sanctions, especially those against Russian oil exports.
What aggravates market tensions is that the United States announced an increase of 25% tariffs on Indian goods from August 28, citing India's continued purchase of Russian oil. Trump also hinted that more tariffs could be imposed on Chinese imports, adding another geopolitical risk to crude oil demand forecasts.
Saudi hikes oil prices and China's import data provide fundamental support
In terms of fundamentals, positive signals are emerging. Saudi Arabia raised its official selling prices to Asia for the second consecutive month, highlighting tight supply and strong demand in the physical market. China's crude oil imports fell 5.4% month-on-month in July, but continued to rise 11.5% year-on-year, supporting expectations of continued strong refining activities.
At the same time, U.S. inventory data also provide support. U.S. Energy Information Administration reported crude oil inventories fell by 3 million barrels last week, far higher than expected 591,000 barrels decline.
The WTI prospect depends on the technical side and sanctions clarity
Despite signs of stabilization, crude oil is still in a state of instability. Geopolitical dynamics (especially progress related to Trump’s summit and U.S. sanctions) continue to overshadow the impact of positive fundamental factors such as decline in inventory and strengthening sand-specific prices.
Forecast: Unless WTI crude oil can continue to exceed US$65.30, downside risks remain. The overall market tone remains cautious, and traders are waiting for clearer policy signals before betting on oil prices to continue to rebound.
