Euro/USD resumed its upward trend on Friday, after undergoing corrections the day before. The main pair jumped to nearly 1.1350 during the European session as the U.S. dollar (USD) slipped again after a brief rebound on Thursday. The dollar index (DXY), which tracks the value of the dollar against six major currencies, fell to a close to a two-week low of 99.40.
Financial market participants continue to sell the dollar as U.S. President Trump's new tax laws increase concerns about the country's fiscal health. The new bill, which includes tax cuts and increased spending on defense and immigration controls, is expected to increase national debt by $3.8 trillion over the next decade, said the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office.
Investors are concerned that the additional burden of national debt may lead to further decline in U.S. credit ratings. Last week, Moody's downgraded the U.S. sovereign credit rating by one rating, from Aaa to Aa1, citing successive administrations and Congress failed to agree on “reversing the trend of large-scale annual fiscal deficits and growing interest costs.”
The scenario of long-term issuer downgrades may lead to higher government borrowing rates, limiting the spending capacity of future generations or making them more costly to borrow.
The implementation of Trump's new bill is also expected to accelerate consumer inflation expectations, assuming that household tax cuts lead to an increase in overall spending, ultimately driving price pressure. This situation will make Fed officials reluctant to lower interest rates.
Federal officials have been guiding that the current point of time is not suitable for adjusting monetary policy, because under President Trump, the uncertainty of the economic outlook is extremely high.
Technical Analysis: Euro/USD climbs to near1.1350
Euro/USD jumped to nearly 1.1350 on Friday. The short-term outlook for the pair is bullish as it stays near the 20-day index moving average (EMA), at about 1.1255.
The Relative Strength Index (RSI) in the 14th period rose to nearly 60.00. If the RSI breaks through this level, the bulls will start to act.
Looking upward, the April 28 high of 1.1425 will be the main resistance level for the pair. On the contrary, a psychological level of 1.1000 will be the key support level for the euro bulls.
