The US dollar/CHF rose on Friday, testing the important resistance zone near 0.8380 as traders digest mixed economic signals from the United States and ongoing global trade tensions. Despite a 0.28% increase on the day, the rise in the pair is still limited by widespread concerns about the resilience of the U.S. economy and uncertainty in tariff policies. The US dollar index (DXY), which measures the performance of the US dollar against six major currencies, trades smoothly, around 100.80, reflects the cautious attitude of the market.
The dollar is looking for support as broader risk sentiment remains fragile. However, recent economic data have increased concerns about the outlook for U.S. growth. The University of Michigan's preliminary May consumer confidence index fell to 50.8, down from 52.2 in April, not meeting market expectations, highlighting the decline in family confidence. Inflation expectations have also risen, with one-year forecast rising from 6.5% to 7.3%, while the five-year outlook has risen from 4.4% to 4.6%, suggesting that price pressures are becoming more ingrained.
In addition, the producer price index (PPI) data in April was lower than expected, with overall PPI falling by 0.5% month-on-month, while the core PPI also contracted by 0.4%, raising new concerns about the pricing power of US eouu.cnpanies. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has hinted that a new round of tariffs will be implemented in the next two to three weeks, further blurring the prospects for global trade and stability in the U.S. economy.
Technical Analysis
From TechnologyFrom a perspective, the US dollar/CHF faces a critical test at 0.8540, which is consistent with the 23.6% Fibonacci retracement level of the 2022 high downtrend. This level also marks a significant front support level for 2015, which was breached earlier this year, further enhancing its importance as a resistance zone. If the region continues to break through, it will indicate a broader trend reversal, with a possible target of 0.8706 of the downtrend from 2022-2025.
However, failure to break through 0.8540 may trigger a deeper pullback with immediate support at 0.8320, a key long-term Fibonacci level previously served as structural basis during the 2015-2016 period. Further downside targets include 0.8185 and a long-term cycle low near 0.7770.
The Relative Strength Index (RSI) remained sluggish, hovering around 37.2 on the weekly chart, indicating that bearish momentum is weakening, but is far from reversal. The pair is also testing its 10-week Simple Moving Average (SMA), close to 0.8419, a key short-term resistance level.
Without a decisive breakthrough above 0.8540, the US dollar/CHF may remain restricted in the short term, and if the U.S. data continues to disappoint, it may face reselling pressure. The broader technical picture remains bearish and the pair needs to confirm the monthly closing at this level to confirm the trend reversal.
