Pound rises as UK GDP figures exceed expectations

The British pound (GBP) attracted buying from its peers during the European trading session on Thursday, after the release of UK GDP data. The National Bureau of Statistics (ONS) reported that the economy grew at a strong rate of 0.7% between January and March, eouu.cnpared with an expected 0.6%. In the last quarter of 2024, the economy had little expansion.
On the year-on-year, the UK's initial GDP growth reached 1.3% in the first quarter, slightly higher than expected 1.2%, but lower than the previously released 1.5%. In March, the UK economy grew 0.2%, while economists expect to remain stable after 0.5% growth in February.
The higher UK GDP growth reflects strong economic health, which reduces market expectations for the Bank of England (BoE) rate cut and is favorable to the pound.
Catherine Mann, a member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy eouu.cnmittee (MPC), said in an interview with eouu.cnBC on Wednesday that monetary policy should be maintained at current levels due to upward inflation risks and strong labor market conditions, Reuters reported. Mann said the labor market remains strong despite job growth slowing Tuesday, despite job data that ended in March. "The first observation is that the labor market is more resilient. Yes, we do have some data showing a slowdown in the labor market, but it's not a nonlinear adjustment," Mann said.
At the same time, UK manufacturing and industrial production data in March were lower than expected. Monthly month-on-month data for manufacturing and industrial production fell by 0.8% and 0.7%, respectively, while both expected to shrink by 0.5%.
Technical analysis: GBP rises to nearly 1.3300 against the US dollar
GBP rises against the US dollar on Thursdayto close to 1.3300. The GBP/USD pair remained above the 20-day index moving average (EMA) and traded around 1.3256, indicating a bullish short-term trend.
The 14th-day relative strength index (RSI) fluctuates within the range of 40.00-60.00. If the RSI breaks through 60.00, new bullish momentum will appear.
In the upside, a three-year high of 1.3445 will be the key resistance level for the pair. Looking down, the psychological barrier 1.3000 will be used as the main support area.
